Social Impact
El reto que enfrentan los niños con discapacidad visual
En el mundo hay más de 19 millones de niños con discapacidad visual (760.000 en España) según la OMS. Muchos de ellos se encuentran con grandes barreras a la hora de aprender, especialmente en áreas como las matemáticas, donde la mayoría de materiales y métodos de enseñanza son visuales.
Aprender conceptos espaciales, figuras o gráficos resulta muy complejo cuando los recursos no están adaptados. Sumas, Restas, divisiones o multiplicaciones que los demás ven en un libro o en la pizarra, ellos deben “ver con las manos” o escuchar mediante herramientas que muchas veces no existen o no funcionan bien.
Un problema global, también presente aquí
Diversos estudios (UNESCO, Perkins School for the Blind, SpringerLink) coinciden en que los estudiantes con discapacidad visual rinden igual que sus compañeros cuando tienen acceso a materiales táctiles y adaptados. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de contextos esto sigue siendo una excepción.
En España, hay organizaciones que llevan años impulsando materiales accesibles, pero aún hay pocas iniciativas que combinen innovación, aprendizaje manipulativo y accesibilidad real desde edades tempranas.
Difficulties in learning mathematics
Spatial representation: concepts such as positions, proportions, and geometry depend on vision. Without tactile or adapted materials, it is very difficult to understand them in depth.
Symbolism and abstraction: mathematical symbols in Braille can be confusing if not taught using a specific methodology. Signs such as ‘+’ or ‘×’ feel similar to the touch and require training to distinguish between them.
Lack of accessible materials: in many schools, books, notebooks, and blackboards are not adapted. Small graphics or numbers are lost, and students depend on an adult or limited assistive technology.
Reduced autonomy: the constant need for support in reading or writing can hinder their independence and self-esteem.
Teachers without resources: many teachers do not have the training or tools necessary to teach mathematics in an inclusive manner, which widens the educational gap.
That's why ikusbox was created
Ikusbox seeks to break down these barriers through tactile materials specifically designed so that children who are blind or have low vision can learn mathematics independently, practically and enjoyably. Each box promotes logical reasoning, tactile exploration, and equal opportunities in the classroom.
